Women's Health Q&A

How does my health benefit from routine women’s health care?

Women’s health care focuses on preventing and treating health concerns and challenges unique to women. While the Apollo Physicians team treats gynecological problems, they also promote optimal health at each stage of a woman’s life.

They screen for and provide personalized care for chronic health conditions that pose a risk to women. For example, many women don’t realize that heart disease is the leading cause of death in women. Women also have a dramatically higher risk of developing autoimmune diseases like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid disease.

What services will I receive through women’s health?

Apollo Physicians offers the full scope of women’s health services, including:

  • Pelvic exams
  • Breast exams
  • Pap smears (cervical cancer screening)
  • Birth control
  • IUD insertion
  • Family planning (birth control)
  • Preconception counseling
  • STD screening and treatment
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Menopause management
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Menstrual disorders (including menstrual migraines)
  • Vaginal infections (including yeast infections)

Women’s health care at Apollo Physicians includes health screenings (for breast, colon, and other cancers) and helping women with lifestyle challenges like stress, anxiety, depression, weight management, and nutrition.

When should I schedule a women’s health exam?

Teenagers should schedule their first well-woman exam between the ages of 13 to 15. Their first visit is intended to evaluate their overall health, introduce them to their provider, and allow them to ask questions about menstruation, sexuality, or other concerns.

They don’t need pelvic exams and Pap smears until they become sexually active or reach 21. After 21, women should have annual well-woman exams, with Pap smears every three years.

What signs indicate I need women’s health care?

You should schedule a women’s health appointment at Apollo Physicians if you have problems like:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Bleeding after menopause
  • Irregular or missed periods
  • No menstrual periods
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Vaginal itching or burning
  • Unpleasant vaginal discharge
  • Frequent need to urinate
